| Melanie Fessel Vice President She is an architect, urban designer and Vice President at Terreform ONE. Melanie was an associate with the Cooper Union Institute for Sustainable Design. Her process focuses on the synergy of design, urban studies, and ecological science. Melanie’s investigations are based on assessing the opportunities as the crucial theoretical basis for developing a socio-ecological framework. She received her post-professional degree Master of Architecture II from The Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art with a focus on the history, theory, and criticism of architecture and urban studies. Prior to Cooper Union, Melanie earned her Diploma in Architecture and Engineering from Berlin University of Technology, Germany after attending the Escuela Superior de Architectura, Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya in Barcelona, Spain. Melanie was awarded the Socrates Erasmus grant from The European Commission, Directorate-General for Education and Culture, which allowed her to continue her studies on ecological urbanism abroad. She was trained and worked as an architect and urban designer in Spain, Switzerland, and New York City, with a focus on municipal buildings and masterplanning. Her work has been widely published in journals such as Bauwelt and Detail Magazine (DE), Die Presse (AT), Architects Newspaper, Metropolis Magazine, and Topos 73 (US) and books such as Badlands New Horizons in Landscape, MIT Press, 2008. Melanie's work has been exhibited at Houghton Gallery, The Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art, New York (NY), First International Tallinn Architecture Biennale (EE), Exhibition Center Heiligenkreuzer Hof, University for Applied Arts, Vienna (AT), The Imagniarium, Uferhallen, Berlin (DE), DOX Center for Contemporary Art, Prague (CZ), MassMOCA, North Adams (MA), and the Eric Arthur Gallery, University of Toronto (CA). In addition, Melanie has been serving as an invited juror at institutions such as Cooper Union and has been lecturing and teaching workshops at ONE Lab Summer School in Brooklyn (NY) and the Darmstaedter Architektur Sommer Rhein-Main, University of Darmstadt (DE). Melanie initiated ONE (Open Network Ecology) Odyssey, an interdisciplinary research enterprise based on philanthropic design principles, to integrate ecological issues into the urban environment. Ecology in design is not only a philosophy that inspires visions of sustainability and social justice, but also a focused scientific endeavor.
